How to install a Drupal8 website

There are different ways to install Drupal8. In this article we will cover the non developers way. It is very easy and requires basic computer skills. Lets jump in to it.

Lets visit the Drupal website to see the Drupal releases. From here we will download an archive of a Drupal 8 project.

We can select different releases. It is recommended to use newest in your projects. 8.8.2 is the latest available version. So let's download it.

To run the website locally on my computer I will need a local server. I will use WAMP. You can use also AMPS, XAMP and so on. You need to have it installed on your computer. Now lets unpack the zip file in newlly created folder “Drupal” in the “www” directory. Everithing in this directory will be serverd from the server. Now I will unzip the the Drupal8 in to it.

This is what we have in the unzipped folder. Everithing you need like codebase to run a Drupal8 website.

Lets move the Drupal files in to the project root folder and delete unnecessary zip and folder.

Now we need to run the local server (WAMP in my case), to open it in a browser (type localhost in the browser address bar) and to create a database where the website data will be stored.

Click on “phpmyadmin” to open the tool for managing databases. By default the login credentials are: user:root and password: empty field.

Now we give name and collation to the database.

Let's get back to the browser and run the project. Type localhost/Drupal in the address bar(in my case is localhost/Drupal, because I named my project folder Drupal).

You will see the "Choose language" screen if everything is done correct. After the language we will select the profile you want. Use “Standart” by default. If you want to know more about profiles read here.

Now we need to connect the website with the database that we created previously. If everything is correct after click "Save and continue" you will see the Drupal progress bar.

The installation process will take a while.

Now the final step - site configuration. Give your site a name, email, login credentials and regional settings.

Congratulations! Now you have a fresh Drupal8 installation 😊

Welcome to the Drupal world! It is great to have you in our community.
